Transceivers in FPGA are an essential component in High Energy Physics environment. They are found in several FPGA families, from low-cost up to high-end devices. SRAM-based FPGA have long history of devices offering internal high speed serial transceiver up to 28 Gb/s nowadays. Flash based FPGA are well known in radiation environment, mainly because they are SEU (Single Event Upset) immune. Up to now they were lacking SERDES and with the introduction in the market of MICROSEMI SmartFusion2 and IGLOO2 they became an interesting competitor in the FPGA market. The presenter, Filippo Costa, will share his personal experience with the latest product of MICROSEMI, SmartFusion2, in the recent development of the new readout card for the TPC detector in ALICE. The presentation will show the current challenges in a project using high speed SERDES in SmartFusion2 and a comparison with its SRAM-based counterpart.
