After the discovery of the Higgs particle the standard model of particle physics is essentially closed. Yet there are many indications that it is only an effective low energy theory of a more fundamental theory. String theory has been the leading candidate in that direction for almost 30 years. Even though testing any potential theory of quantum gravity is very challenging, progress has been made over the past few years to contrast string theory models with available and future observations. An overview of these attempts will be given.
