Research Doctorate in Geophysics

General Introduction

Geophysics encompasses a broad range of science disciplines and applications to environmental and economic endeavors. In an exciting research environment, Faculty and students are addressing fundamental questions about our world, from earthquakes and volcanoes to understanding of weather patterns and the ocean circulation.

Understanding our planet will be a fundamental challenge for the scientific community over the next century. Almost every practical aspect of society—population, environment, economics, politics — is and will be increasingly impacted by our relationship with the Earth. The University of Bologna Geophysics Ph.D. degree is dedicated to facing these challenges and offers great opportunities for students who wish to pursue graduate studies.

Three are the major research sectors of Geophysics@UniBO:

Solid Earth

fields of active research are seismology, physics of volcanism, geodesy, quantitative geodynamics, tsunami

Atmosphere

fields of active research are atmospheric physics and chemistry, remote sensing of the atmosphere, urban meteorology, atmospheric dynamics and weather forecasting, physical climatology

Oceans

fields of active research are ocean circulation dynamics, numerical modeling of the ocean, ocean predictions, marine biogeochemical cycles, numerical modeling of pollutants in the marine environment

Our graduate students enter with diverse undergraduate preparation, with Majors in Physics as well as Applied Mathematics, Biology, Geophysics and Geology, Chemistry, Engineering and Environmental Sciences. Many undergraduates exposed for the first time to Earth sciences find that this field provides the combination they've been looking for: one that uses sophisticated techniques, multidisciplinary knowledge, with extremely important socio-economic implications.
